This month brings to fruition, a long wait for a few very rare (and much delayed) models. Minichamps, makers of excellent models in both 1/43 and 1/18th scale, had mentioned that they were going to be releasing a new batch of lotus models in December....of 2007. So, anxiously, I awaited the releases....and waited, and waited, and... I think you get the picture.
Turn the clock ahead to June 2010, and now I have these two beautiful lotus models in my hands ... thanks to Jim at Diecasm!!
First up is the absolutely gorgeous Lotus Type 81, as driven by Mario Andretti at the Brazilian GP of 1980. The Lotus 81 was essentially a Type 80, with the same gearbox and engine, but with
significant changes to the suspension. Essex was now the sponsor, as Martini had withdrawn it's support the previous year. While not a memorable car as far as results go, the one redeeming factor was that the Type 81 was tested by a young Nigel Mansell!!
Back to the model: The Essex paint scheme appears to be spot on, with the metallic blue paint accenting the red and silver livery ..... .just stunning! As far as I can tell, this is the first time this model as been produced, fully built. This model is limited to just 2,304 pieces.....worldwide!
Here's another overhead shot so you can see the details! I can't stress this enough, if you want one, you had better contact Jim, or pay LOTS later via Ebay. This, (and the next model) is one that I feel will only increase in price due to it's rarity.
The other model that I ordered from Jim is the Lotus 88, as driven by Elio De Angelis for the Long Beach GP practice of 1981. Notice it says "practice"... The Lotus 88 was the car that Cohn utilized the twin chassis idea on. Each time the car passed through scrutineering, but was always black flagged for the actual race. Each time, Lotus reverted to the type 81. At the Argentina race, Cohn once again was banned from racing the 88. He famously wrote a note to the FISA that he was leaving to go watch the American Space Shuttle taking off - in the hope of reminding himself about mankind's real technological achievements.
This model again sports some great details ... though much of the inner workings are covered up by the unique body. This car is limited to 2, 016 pieces ... so again, get it if you want it... Now!
Here's another top down shot! I am glad that I added these to my collection .... and I hope that you will too!
Happy Hunting!
