'Twas the week before Christmas, and all through the house.. let's make sure this gets copied, and left for the spouse!
Hard to believe another year is almost passed. The testament to Lotus models, is that I have now been writing this article for 6 years now, and haven't had to repeat any of the models., we're fortunate (or in my case, broke) that there continues to be new models released on a consistent basis. In many cases, manufacturers such as Spark, enable the Lotusphile to collect models that were previously unreleased. I thought we would review a few models from IXO this time around ... and they're just the right size to fit in a stocking, no less (hint, hint)!
A few years ago, I reviewed the Lotus Elite from IXO, but since that time, they have released several variations on the Elite-and more coming in the future. These models are in 1/43 scale, are die-cast, and feature both tampo decals, along with sonic photoetch parts. In addition, IXO models have a nice acrylic dust cover to protect your "investment" (at least that is what excuse that I try with my wife).
First up is the Lotus Elite #38 that raced at LeMans in 1959. The drivers were Vidilles & Malle. As an interesting side note, they must have had different regulations on fuel capacity, as this model has two gas tanks. IXO has done a commendable job on this model, with correct wire wheels, and decals for the hood straps. This is model # LMC069.
Next, we have the Lotus Elite #38 that raced at LcMans in 1961. This time, the drivers were Allen & Taylor, and this car won in it's class. As you will note. IXO has changed a few details to make the car more authentic, instead of just using the same exact mold and repainting it. This particular car has an added air scoop on the front hood (no doubt to deal with overheating problems), and only one gas cap. In this case, Lotus chose to go with the flip up caps - similar to what you would see on a Cobra. Details are spot on, again with excellent paint, nice tampo decals, and a few photoetched parts for good measure. This is model # LMC 074.
From the Elite, we go to the rally circuit! IXO has released (again, the first to my knowledge) a 1/43 Talbot Sunbeam Lotus. There are several variations of this car, this particular one being the car that raced in the San Remo Rally in 1979, and was driven by Pond & Grindrod. Note the details such as the roof antenna, bumper mounted headlights, and photoetch wiper blades. in addition, there are many tampo decals, including the replication of the hood pins, various mud flaps and air vents. If you are fan of these cars, then it belongs in your collection! The model # is RACOSO.
Finally, from old to new Lotus. Here's the Lotus Exige from IXO, complete in a Krypton Green paint scheme, from 2003. Again, there are some nice detail bits on this model, including a mesh grill on the front air intake, and decals for the racing seat belts. This particular one is model # MOC061. I have several (that's an understatement!) models from IXO in different makes of cars, and I have yet to have one that I was disappointed in for the price point. So, if interested. I think they arc worth adding to your collection. You can find these at your usual diecast sources, including Jim at Diecasm.
Next month, we will look at a few releases in the Matchbox range of cars, along with some cool "extras" that can be used with your 1/43 diecast collection. Have a blessed holiday season, and I'll get you caught up in 2009!
Happy hunting!
